Greetings,

I have a plant in my office that I inherited when I started working here. Unfortunately, I don't know its name. The plant isn't in the best condition; some leaves are dropping, and while I added some soil to the top, I haven't changed its entire soil. I would appreciate any advice on how to properly care for and groom it.

Thank you.

Ficus Benjamina (commonly known as ‘weeping fig’) is one of my favourite indoor trees. Some leaf dropping is normal. Excessive leaf dropping could be caused by overwatering, low light conditions or simply a location change. Ficus Benjamina does not like to be moved. Your plant could use some trimming of dead branches and some shaping but I wouldn’t do anything too drastic until the plant is a little healthier.

The identification of this plants is "Ficus benjamina"(Weeping Fig). Some major causes behind the leaves drooping are:

Light: Weeping fig trees prefer bright, indirect light.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Humidity: Weeping fig trees thrive in humid environments. To increase humidity around the plant, you can mist leaves regularly.

Fertilization: Feed your weeping fig tree with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Pruning: Regular pruning can help maintain the shape and size of your weeping fig tree. Pruning can also help improve air circulation of the plant.

Repotting: Repotting is best done in the spring when the plant is actively growing.

Pest Control: Keep an eye on common pests such as spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs which can occasionally infest weeping fig trees.

By following these care tips, you can help your weeping fig tree thrive and minimize issues such as leaf drop.
